Anne E. (McInerny) Mahler, 95, a longtime resident of Upton, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband Henry S. Mahler, Jr.

Anne was born in Worcester, one of nine children of the late John Edward and Anna Mary (Butler) McInerny. She attended UMass Amherst and Boston School of Occupational Therapy at Tufts University. She was an Occupational Therapist at Worcester State Hospital until leaving that position in 1944 to assist in the war effort. She became a welder for St. Pierre Chain Co. in Worcester, welding the very large links that made up anchor chains for the U.S Navy. After the death of her husband in 1967, she returned to school nights, graduating from Worcester Junior College with an Associates degree in Business.

She worked for various banks in the Worcester area before starting at the Post Office. She became Postmaster of the Northbridge location in 1980. Anne was always looking for ways to help people, so after her retirement she became a home health aide with the Visiting Nurses Association.

Anne's faith was a big part of her life, and she was very active in her parish church. She was a Eucharistic Minister at the former Holy Angels Parish in Upton, and a communicant of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish. She had been a member of Crusillo, and was a CCD teacher for almost 40 years. Anne loved hearing from former students.

Her volunteer work also included being a Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad litem (CASA/GAL), and a Foster Care Reviewer with the DHHS. She was also often called upon to drive the elderly to doctor appointments well into her 80's.

She leaves her 8 children, and her much loved sons and daughters-in-law: Philip Mahler and his wife Margot of Carlisle, Keith Mahler and his wife Linda of Hampton, NH, Leslie Ardison of Westminster, Janet Carter of Whitinsville, Evelyn Enos and her husband David of Oakham, Andrew Mahler and his wife Anne of Webster, Peter Mahler of Grafton, and Dana Claflin and her husband Ron of Uxbridge; a sister Bernice Garnett of Ventura, CA; sister-in-law Alice McInerney; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her sisters Mary Slattery, Claire Scully Lankau, and Phyllis Strub and brothers John, Robert, Francis, and Richard McInerny predeceased her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Gabriel's Building Fund, 151 Mendon St., Upton 01568.
