Roger I. Bartlett

Roger I. Bartlett, 86, of Upton, died Monday, January 25, 2010 in Beaumont Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Northbridge after a period of declining health. A retired carpentry instructor at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, he was the husband of Marie A. (Viger) Bartlett, who died in 2008 after 62 years of marriage.

Mr. Bartlett was born in Blackstone, the son of the late Wilfred and Adelina (Charrette) Bartlett, and lived there until enlisting in the Navy in 1945. During World War II, he was assigned to Radio School in Boston, and then to the U.S.S. Pasadena, which took part in seven major battles in the Pacific Fleet under the command of Admiral Hallsey. When the war ended, his ship entered Tokyo Bay and anchored near the Battleship Missouri, where he witnessed the signing of the Peace Treaty.

He earned teaching credentials at Fitchburg State College and taught mill and house carpentry at Blackstone Valley Tech for 23 years, retiring in 1990.

A resident of Upton for 54 years, Mr. Bartlett served on the Upton Zoning Board of Appeals for many years. He was a life member of George L. Wood VFW Post 5594 in Upton, and a communicant of Holy Angels Parish, where he served as a lector, was a former president of the Holy Name Society, and was active for many years in Bishop Fund Drives.

He leaves two sons, Robert P. Bartlett and his wife Kathleen of Bellingham and David R. Bartlett and his wife Mary of Upton; five grandchildren, Tracy Bartlett of Worcester, Timothy Bartlett of Bellingham, Amy Webster of Mansfield, and twins Tyler and Matthew Bartlett of Upton; and one great-grandson, Nathan Webster of Mansfield.

The family asks that, if desired, memorial donations be made to the St. Gabriel the Archangel Building Fund, c/o Holy Angels Rectory, 2 Nelson Street, Upton 01568.

Service Details

Funeral services with full military honors will be held Friday, January 29,
from the funeral home at 45 Main St., Upton, with a
Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Milford St., Upton.
Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
