Joan E. (Delaney) Shanahan

Joan E. (Delaney) Shanahan, 78, a well-known community volunteer and former member of the Upton Finance Committee and Board of Selectmen, died Sunday, April 2, 2017 at home. She was the wife of Charles M. Shanahan.
Mrs. Shanahan was born in Hartford, CT, a daughter of the late John B. and Birnie C. (Bocquin) Delaney, and had lived in Upton for 50 years. She earned a master's degree in finance from Framingham State and had worked as a bank clerk and bookkeeper, retiring from EMC in Hopkinton several years ago. After serving many years on the Upton Council on Aging and the Finance Committee, she was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2001 and served six years, including two terms as chair. She was also a longtime active member of the Upton Bloomer Girls, the Democratic Town Committee, the Upton Woman's Club, Upton Library Trustees, Upton Historical Society, and Friends of the Upton State Forest.
In addition to her husband of 49 years, she leaves her sister, Mary Delaney of Upton, a niece and a nephew. She was also the sister of the late John T. Delaney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Upton Town Library, Box 622, Upton 01568.

Following cremation, private burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery
at the convenience of the family.

Service Details
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 6 at 10 a.m.in the United Parish Church, 1 Church St., Upton.
Following cremation, private burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery
