Joseph "Joe" McMahon, 79, of Upton, a man of deep dedication, service, and immense love for his family, peacefully passed away May 19th surrounded by his loved ones. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie (Saucier) McMahon, who passed away in April, just a few weeks before him.
Born in August 1946 to Dorothy and Henry McMahon, Joe grew up with a strong sense of purpose and community. He graduated from Nipmuc High School with the Class of 1964 before proudly answering the call to serve his country. In 1966, Joe joined the United States Army and honorably served during the Vietnam War. His military service instilled in him a lifelong pride in his country and fellow veterans, leading him to become a dedicated lifetime member of VFW Post 5594.
In 1974, Joe married the love of his life, Marie, with whom he built a beautiful life until her passing. Together, they raised four boys and created a home centered on family, hard work, and laughter. Joe was a devoted and proud father to Adam (and his wife Heather), Ethan (and his wife Lynn-Ann), Ryan (and his wife Alisa), and Marc.
Joe’s greatest joy was watching his family grow. He was a proud grandfather to Jared (and his wife Marissa), Kayla (and her fiance Sulayman), Jillian, Cameron, Nathan, Makenna, and Liam; and a doting great-grandfather to Lukas and Griffin.
Professionally, Joe built a respected, lifetime career at AT&T. Outside of work, he was a man of many talents who threw his heart into his passions. Known for his bright, bubbly personality, Joe brought energy to everything he did. He was a committed Masonic Mason and Shriner, dedicating much of his life to fellowship and the service of others. An avid sportsman and hobbyist, Joe could often be found on the softball field, at the bowling alley, bird watching, working on puzzles, or tending to his beautiful garden. He loved to sing, whether taking center stage for karaoke or just lifting the spirits of those around him. His family and friends will deeply miss his warm, familiar greetings and classic expressions like “wicked,” “no-way!,” and his trademark, “it’s…” whenever he welcomed family or friends.
Joe is survived by his siblings Mary Carmel, Robert, Patricia, Michelle, and Michael, as well as many loving nieces and nephews who will dearly miss their Uncle Joe. He was reunited in peace with his beloved wife, Marie; his parents, Dorothy and Henry; and his siblings Franky, Roberta (Bernie), and Laurie.
Joe’s warmth, his joyful spirit, and his fierce love for his family leave an enduring legacy that will never be forgotten.
Calling hours will be on Friday May 29th from 4 to 7 P.M. in the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 30th at 10:30 A.M. in St. Gabriel’s Archangel Church, 151 Mendon Street, Upton. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Upton.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joe's memory to VFW Post 5594 or the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
