Michael W. Smith, Sr., 69, of Upton, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
Born in Framingham, he was a son of the late Clyde Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth (Pierce) Smith. He was raised and educated in Upton and was a graduate of Nipmuc Regional High School Class of 1974.
Prior to his retirement, Michael was employed by Bay State Abrasives in Westborough for 28 years. He later earned a degree in HVAC Services and continued his career working for All Temp Systems Mechanical HVAC and CGIT.
Michael enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gambling—especially scratch tickets. He loved spending time at “the camp,” where you could almost always find him sitting by the fire. He was also famously known for being able to out-eat just about anyone when it came to lobster.
Michael had the gift of gab. Anyone who ran into him at Honey Farms was likely to be an hour late to wherever they were headed.
Most of all, Michael cherished time with his family and friends, particularly his beloved grandchildren. Nothing brought a bigger smile to his face than a hug from Matthew and Keagan.
He is survived by his two sons, Paul Smith of Upton and Michael Smith, Jr. and his wife Heather, of Uxbridge; his two grandchildren, Matthew and Keagan Smith; his siblings, Althea Greene of Upton, Christopher Smith of Auburn, and Jeffrey Smith of Maine; a sister-in-law, Janet Smith of Webster; many nieces and nephews; and his former wife Kathi Smith of Upton.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Albert Smith and Betty Carol.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, at the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton. A prayer and remembrance service will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be sent to the Make a Wish Foundation via Make-A-Wish America.
