Richard E. Whitney, 67, a lifelong resident of Grafton, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Cynthia Whitney; his daughters, Megan Elizabeth and her husband Justin, and Kari Ann; and his cherished grandchildren, Joseph Ellis and Samantha Rose. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Nene, his sister Mary (Whitney) Ricker, and several nieces. Richard had a special place in his heart for his "bonus family" Joel, Susan, and Erik Havalotti and especially Mary Russell, whom he held dear. He will also be deeply missed by his longtime friend, Kerry Brooks.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jane (Borucki) and Francis Whitney, as well as two of his brothers.
A proud Grafton native, Richard lived in the town his entire life and loved it dearly. Over the years, he held many jobs, but the roles he cherished most were those of husband, father, "Papa," and loyal friend. His passions were many: he had a love for Harley-Davidson motorcycle, each of which he named, as well as trips to the casino, and above all, spending time with his family.
Richard was known for his gift of gab, he could outtalk anyone and for his unwavering readiness to help a friend in need. His kindness, humor, and boundless energy will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Thursday, June 26, in the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton.
His graveside service with military honors, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 27, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville Street, North Grafton.
