On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Robert Alan "Bob" Lazar, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 87. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Bob was born on November 6, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Max and Ruth Lazar. A gifted athlete, he played basketball at James Madison High School in Brooklyn, where he played in the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) New York City championship game at Madison Square Garden. He went on to play college basketball at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut and served in the U.S. Army Reserve during his college years. It was at Bridgeport that he met Judith Allsopp, and on June 6, 1961, they were married. They settled in Port Washington, NY, on Long Island, where they raised two sons, Greg and Drew.
Bob began his career in the fur industry in New York City, where he worked for many years as a fur matcher. In 1992, he earned a master's degree in education and began a second career teaching English as a Second Language in Queens, NY. He retired in 2003 at the age of 65 but continued teaching ESL part time for a number of years afterward.
In 2009, Bob and Judy moved to Holden, Massachusetts, where they lived at the Seasons at Salisbury for ten years. There they renewed their wedding vows on their 50th anniversary. After Judy's passing in 2019, Dad made his home at The Willows in Westborough, where he enjoyed playing ping-pong and bridge and having lunch every day with his group of friends.
Bob's love of sports lasted his whole life. He was an avid recreational and club tennis player on Long Island and in Massachusetts, and he made many good friends at the Holden Towers tennis club. He kept playing well into his eighties, often with his son Greg at the Westboro Tennis and Swim Club. He was also a devoted, lifelong New York Knicks fan. Beyond sports, he had a lifelong love of music, especially folk music, and was a naturally talented piano player.
Bob's greatest love was for his family. He was devoted to Judy throughout their marriage and was profoundly proud and supportive of his sons, their wives, and his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Judith (Allsopp) Lazar, and his sister, Joan Lazar. He is survived by his two sons, Gregory Lazar and his wife Christine, of Upton, and Drew Lazar and his wife Monsikarn, of Muncie, IN; and three grandchildren, Brendan, Bridget, and Isaac Lazar.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Upton at noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Second Serve, a children's tennis charity, at www.secondserve.org/donations.
