Robert E. Maynard

GRAFTON - Robert E. Maynard, 91, of Grafton, died early Friday, March 24, 2006 in UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He and his wife, Kathleen J. (Horgan) Maynard, celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in February.

Mr. Maynard was born in Worcester, a son of the late Ernest and Enid (Howe) Maynard. He grew up in Shrewsbury and was a 1932 graduate of Shrewsbury High School. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute with the Class of 1936 and later completed a program at the WPI School of Industrial Management and course work in advanced management at Harvard University. He had lived for many years in Upton, where he served on the Upton School Committee and had a lengthy tenure as chairman of the Upton Planning Board. He moved to Millbury in 1964 and then retired to Dennis in 1979 before moving to Grafton in 1998.

He worked as director of purchases at the former Whitin Machine Works in Whitinsville and then for the Vacuum Division of Varian in Lexington until retiring in 1979. He had been an officer in the Worcester Area Purchasing Agents Association, commodore of the Cape Cod Power Squadron, and a member of the Falmouth Lodge of Masons. A licensed pilot, he enjoyed flying small planes from the former Mendon Airport. He also enjoyed a variety of sports, including golf, tennis, skiing, and sailing.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert E. Maynard, Jr. and his wife Judy of Grafton, and Jeff E. Maynard and his wife Sarah of Jackson, NH; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Peter S. Maynard of Dennis, who died in 1996, and the brother of the late Herbert F. Maynard of Northfield, who died in 2005.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral services Monday, March 27, 2006, at 10 a.m. in the
Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, Upton.
Burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Upton.
Calling hours at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
