James R. Earl

James R. Earl, 70, of Upton, passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 14, 2022, at the UMass Memorial University Campus in Worcester, with his beloved family by his side.  He is the beloved husband of 45 years to Linda (Cervassi) Earl.

Born in Milford, he was a son of Norma (Sandstrom) Earl of Upton, and the late Robert F. Earl, Sr.  He was raised and educated in the Mendon-Upton public school system (class of 1970) and went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Worcester State. He also owned Earl Transportation, providing the bus services for all of Mendon and Upton School system. Currently, he was employed for numerous years as the Town Assessor for the Town of Upton. He was an avid volunteer at the Upton Senior Center, from fixing the Bingo board to driving the van to ensure the seniors got where they needed to go.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Earl was employed as a high school math teacher at Arlington Catholic high school. He spent several years enjoying teaching the students, going above and beyond in every way. He also was responsible for transporting the student athletes to their corresponding events and would take his time to review students’ homework and questions while waiting for the sporting match to end.

He enjoyed travelling with his family, riding his motorcycle, hiking, skiing, horseback riding, and teaching.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his son, Eric Earl and his wife, Jennifer, of Upton; his brothers, Jeffrey Earl and his wife Holly, of Upton, and Steven Earl and his wife Rita, of Upton; and his beloved granddaughter, Gianna, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless others.

He is predeceased by his father and by his brother, Robert Earl, Jr.

His funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Monday, August 22, in the Pickering & Son Upton Funeral Home, 45 Main St. Upton.  A collation will immediately follow the service at the Upton VFW, 15 Milford St. Upton.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 PM in the funeral home on Sunday, August 21.
